MINUTES

MIDDLETON ARTS COMMITTEE

THURSDAY    JANUARY 10, 2008      5:30 P.M.

MEMBERS PRESENT:  Conhaim, Hassert, Sandrock, Hammes

MEMBERS ABSENT:  Boswell

OTHERS PRESENT: Attoun

1.           Minutes of 11-29-07

Moved by Hammes, seconded by Sandrock, to approve the minutes of 11-29-07.  Motion carried.

2.           Select a Site for Design Solicitation (Conhaim)

Hammes suggested waiting to select a site until we get the Public Art Master Plan moving forward. The group agreed.

3.           Police Station Art (Conhaim)

Conhaim showed a video from Brad Keil, Middleton Police Chief, that showed pre-fabricated bronze statues of police officers. Conhaim stated that Keil was particularly interested in the statue of the police officer holding a child’s hand. Attoun will find out the architect for the new Police Station and who sits on the Building Committee. Attoun will then arrange a meeting with the architects, Building Committee, and the Arts Committee.

4.           RFP – Public Art Master Planner (Attoun)

Attoun reported that she had not received any responses to the RFP sent out to hire a master planner. The committee directed Attoun to call Chris Manke at the Wisconsin Arts Board to update her and see if she has any other master planner contacts, and then call Tom Borrup to see if Community and Cultural Development, to see if he would be interested in submitting a proposal if the deadline were extended. The RFP will be re-sent before the next meeting.

5.           Big Event Restaurant / Art Crawl (Attoun)

The Arts Committee determined that they would be willing to help out somewhat with the Restaurant / Art Crawl by securing artists for 5 of the restaurants once Tourism Director, Val Steel, provides the restaurants. The Arts Committee is concerned about the time and manpower it will take to match the artists with the restaurants, as well as ensuring that things go smoothly the day of the event.

6.           Website Updates (Boswell)

Boswell was excused from the meeting. Our contract with Tsela Barr has been fulfilled. If the Arts Committee determines that they would like to work with Tsela this year, they will need to enter into a new agreement.

The Committee looked over the new books purchased for the lending library. Attoun gave the Committee a budget overview.

Moved by Hassert, seconded by Sandrock, to approve the appointment of Meghan Mackey to the Arts Committee. The appointment will go the Common Council on January 22, 2008.  Motion carried.

Sandrock pitched the idea of getting art for a temporary time. The benefits are that the cost would be decreased and that people could get used to seeing art around the city before the Committee does a full-fledged project. One example is the sculpture pad in the Historic Third Ward in Milwaukee. Attoun will get a copy of the presentation Hassert gave on the Third Ward sculpture pad, and will contact Milwaukee’s Art Director to find out how successful the project has been.

10.         Adjourn

The meeting was adjourned at 6:32 P.M. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 21, at 5:30 P.M.
